My name is Daniel Chui. I´m a photographer because there´s too much beauty in the world to sit still and let it pass me by. I specialize in baby and children´s photography in Northern California. My goal as an artist is to leave your family with photos that capture the essence of your son or daughter, and the relationship you share.
Yes, that´s me: four years old and a real heart-throb. Since then, I have gradually becomes less and less cute - arriving at my present state. My photography can be seen as a recuperation of my former cuteness via art instead of intense cosmetic surgery.
I am the most active and zany photographer that will ever work with your children. I am not of the "wave a ball in the face of a child to make him smile" school of photography. I see children as incredibly perceptive, and capable of seeing through such clever ploys. That´s why my photo shoots focus on capturing your child as they play, eat, or in general interact with their loved ones in a familiar setting.
I´m ruthlessly demanding of the parents in said photoshoots. Parents will jump, sing, wiggle hips, serve brownies, and otherwise compromise all social dignity in the pursuit of their own child´s happiness, which I subsequently capture. I am also willing to wiggle to get the perfect shot.
I was born on September 27th, 1985 in Palo Alto, California. I´m a Palo Alto boy. Peninsula Creamery, Izzy´s Bagels, Kirk´s Steakburgers back when it was still on California Avenue. I was even around before Pizza A GoGo was usurped by the inferior Pizza My Heart.
On the schoolyard, I remember the exact day that I transformed from Daniel and became Chewy (Chui).
It happened like this: remember the scene in Spider-Man, when Peter Parker discovers he can stick to walls? Well, my superhero origin is much cooler.
Ol´ Kenneth Tsang was the first one to call me Choo Choo Train. This childhood epiphany, playing off of the glorious English pronunciation of my last name, was key to the creation of a hero. Humbly speaking.
At the time, this was the peak of wit, and single-handedly conjured great hilarity and camaraderie among my motley band of friends.
Since then, the evolution to Chewy was as obvious and natural as the effects of being bitten by a radioactive spider. People ask me, from time to time, to make the Wookie sound from Star Wars. Sorry to disappoint, but no-can-do. It comes out more Ewok than anything.
I started taking photos in 1999 with a beat-up Pentax Asahi I inherited from my father. My instructor, Wayne Hoy, taught me that it´s not only okay, but in fact preferable to mumble to oneself while developing the film. I´ve translated that fundamental principle to the digital medium and now mumble to myself while using Adobe Photoshop CS3 to make my clients and their children exceedingly beautiful.
I´m a graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Economics. Magna cum laude, baby.
In the past two years, I´ve learned to speak Spanish fluently by living in Mexico and Spain. I´m also actively involved in the Boy Scouts, having achieved my Eagle Scout rank in 2003.
For the past four years, I have worked in both San Diego and the Bay Area as a wedding, engagement and child photographer.
The moments I capture are moments that will never be repeated. But if I can freeze these moments, frame them and hang them in the homes of my clients, then the unique beauty of moments past need never be forgotten.
Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or are interested in hiring me. I´m very serious about what I do, and I guarantee the satisfaction of my clients.
